Investigating Phone Scam
Our Office was notified Friday May 08, 2015, a phone scam began to circulate throughout the Mahoning Valley. We have been contacted by 3 individuals that all received the same call from Friday May 08, 2015 through Monday May 11, 2015.
The caller states that he is Sgt. Bradley from the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office. He advises the victim that they had missed jury duty and that they can avoid a warrant for their arrest if they pay a monetary fee as restitution toward the court. The suspect will take a credit card payment over the phone or give instructions on a where to send a money order if the victim agrees to pay the alleged fine.
The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the source of the calls.
Tips for citizens concerning telemarketing scams:
No legitimate law enforcement agency or court will request a citizen to pay fines via a money order or credit card over the phone
Take down the phone number and report it.
Do not continue to talk to them. Hang up.
